Easily one of
the most exciting and innovative performances the Chicks have given. This
yearly event to support breast cancer brought a divergent group of musicians
together to play an even more ecclectic set of music. The Chicks sing with
old favorites like Sheryl Crow, grand lady of country Emmylou Harris, and
new and old pop stars like Pat Benetar and Nelly Frutado. Without exception
the songs are heartfelt, soulful, and distinctly Dixie. The highlight of
this show is a 10 minute jam session featuring all of the ladies in attendance
on everything from Amazing Grace to the Eagles Take it to the Limit. The
only sour note to the performance is Mary Blige, clearly out of her league
here, over-singing and over-dramatizing (during the acoustic set she manages
to switch the topic from breast cancer to her own alcohol problems and
bursts into tears, insults Pat Benetar for being menopausal, and wonders
if everyone in attendance know the lyrics to Amazing Grace- which she butchers
in a way that would make Mariah Carey blush). Her duet with Natalie is
nothing short of embarassing- it's like watching a one-sided version of
Dueling Banjos. But try as hard as she might, Blige couldn't possibly ruin
for what Chicks fans should be a staple performance. Natalie's range is
more evident here than anywhere else- from rock to blues to soul to r&b
to pop.
